Just a warning before you scroll any further these images do contain graphic images of birth, bodies, and placentas.
I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I love births. They’re just so sacred, a new life is here and on this planet and we can honor that by documenting how they got here. I love watching the strength of a mother surface and her first few moments with her new human. I love watching her family and friends gather, her support system rise and activate. I love seeing her partner support her and nourish her. I just overall think it’s one of my most sacred roles to capture that experience for a new mom and a new family and a new person. So, when Rachel asked me to photograph her birth I knew I would do everything possible to be there. Since my schedule is very fixed between work and life, I only take on 2-3 birth clients a year, and during the summer. For Rachel, one of my midwives and friends I knew I wanted to be there to see her transform again into a new mom. I arrived just after sunrise and walked in the front door to baby cries, I knew I hadn’t drove quick enough, but when I walked in to her room she still hadn’t delivered her placenta, meaning baby was still super fresh as was her power. Her team was still there physically supporting her and guiding her through the remainder of the process. I stayed for about 2 hours to document those first moments and these images are some of the results of that time…
