The Magician
The Magician card is one of the beginning cards in the tarot story not quite the first but one of the early lessons as we step into our own magic.
When I first started tarot I didn’t realize there was a story, I thought each card had it’s own meaning and that was that. As I listed to Strange Magic, I listed to two witches share the story of the major arcana. I finally grasped each cards Iconic imagery and what it meant. Still working on the minor arcana but after listening to their conversations I felt like I really got it. I guess that podcast has ended but there are still recordings up on spotify and such, If I were you I’d listen before they’re deleted.
The magician is well, a magician. Someone who uses magic and alchemy. But in this card, we’re grasping the understanding of ourselves as magicians. We can use magic for ourselves to benefit us and our thoughts and ideas, but are we really doing much for society? are we serving the greater good? maybe yes, other times, no. There’s not a judgement here - everything is neutral but there is a story and that story is that the magician uses magic for themselves. The symbolism in the rider-waite-smith tarot deck - the classic one pictured on the top right has a magician holding the staff to represent the connection between heaven and earth, in the she wolfe tarot deck the name is Magus. both are representative of creation. And from one of my favorite oracle decks the creator card. With the three of these cards side by side I feel confident in my comprehension and symbolism of the cards.
